Things to know about getting married

We have collected the most important information about getting married from magyarorszag.hu:

Administration needs to be done in person.

Eligibility

Marrying parties: one man and one woman, they have full legal capacity and they must be at least 16 years of age.

Declaring intention to get married

Prior to the marriage, the couple must declare to the registrar that there is no legal impediment to their marriage and they must prove that the legal conditions for their marriage are met. The couple together declare their intention to marry, in person, and the registrar draws up a record and then the couple signs it.

Getting married

The marriage takes place in the presence of the best man and the maid of honour in public, in the office of the local government.

Immediately prior to getting married, the registrar re-examines whether there is a legal impediment to the marriage and whether the legal preconditions exist.

The registrar first asks one person by name, then the other: Does he/she declare that he/she is marrying the other party present? If both marrying parties answer „yes” to the question asked, the registrar declares that the parties, called by their married name, are husband and wife in accordance with the Act on: Civil code

Entering into marriage

A marriage occurs when a man and a woman present together declare in person to the registrar that they marry each other. The declaration shall not be subject to any condition or time limit.

After the mutual declaration, the registrar establishes the marriage and enters the fact of the marriage in the civil registry.

If a non-Hungarian citizen wishes to marry in Hungary, he or she must prove that there are no obstacles to the marriage under personal right. In justified cases, the registry office may grant an exemption from having the certificate.

Interpreter

If the couple or the best man/maid of honour does not speak Hungarian and the registrar does not understand the foreign language spoken by the couple or the best man/maid of honour, an interpreter can help. The couple is responsible for providing an interpreter.

The best man /maid of honor

The best man/ maid of honor shall be an adult who has proper capacity. The couple is responsible for having a best man and a maid of honor.

Deadlines

The registrar may only set a date for getting married thirty days after the announcement of the intention to marry. The registrar sets the date of the marriage after consultation with the couple.

Other information

On which days is it not possible to get married?

No marriage may take place on 1 January, 15 March, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Pentecost Sunday, Pentecost Monday, 20 August, 23 October, 1 November and 24-26 December, and if it is a public holiday for civil servants in the office of that body, on 1 July.

Where can you get married?

The local government provides the office space suitable for getting married free of charge. The registrar of the place of registration of the intention to marry shall decide whether to allow the marriage to take place outside the office or outside of office hours within eight days of the submission of the application.

Issuance of marriage certificate

From 16.02.2019., the bodies authorized to issue the birth certificate shall, at the request of the client, issue the multilingual form provided in Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 of the European Parliament and of the Council using the EAW system as an annex to the birth certificate.

FAQ

What languages do you translate from/into?

English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish, Czech, Serbian, Hebrew, Turkish, Croatian, Slovak, Slovenian, Portuguese, Chinese, Greek, Swedish, Danish, Arabic and Hungarian.

How long does it take to complete the translation?

The translation deadline depends on the needs of our client. When sending a quote, we provide three prices, normal, urgent and express, so you can choose the one that suits you best. We can prepare the translation even in one business day.

Can I rely on confidentiality for legal and corporate translations?

Of course, we treat all incoming documents confidentially and ask our partners to do the same. Third parties will only be given access to the document if you have placed an order or if it is essential for the quotation due to the language pair and/or editing. However, if deemed necessary, a confidentiality agreement may be signed.

How will the final price be calculated?

In the case of translations, the final price is usually calculated on the basis of the number of characters (with spaces) in the target document, i.e. of the translation

In individual cases, a different calculation may be applied (e.g. unit price or source language character price), but this will always be indicated in the quotation.

I have to submit the completed translation to an official body. Is Benedictum Kft authorised to prepare such technical translation?

Yes, our company is authorised to provide technical translations. However, it is important to note that, according to the effective version of MT Decree 24/1986 (VI.26.), we can only provide certified translations of company extracts, data to be entered in the Commercial Register and company documents for use in Hungary. For other documents, we can issue a translation certified for official use (“certified translation”), in which we certify that it has been prepared by a professional translator and that it is identical in all respects to the original. In such cases, we usually recommend asking the recipient entity whether they accept the translation prepared by us, or whether they insist on the certified translation issued by OFFI Zrt.

We also produce certified translations for foreign use. In such cases, the above restriction does not apply. Based on our experience, our translations are accepted.

When and how can I pay for the translation?

For the first order, half of the estimated price will be invoiced as a deposit, which you can pay in cash at our office (Budapest/Debrecen/Miskolc) or by bank transfer. We will start the translation as soon as we receive the payment. In this case, please provide your invoice data when placing the order!

If it is not your first order, you can pay the invoice of the entire amount in cash at our office in (Budapest/Debrecen/Miskolc) or by bank transfer.
